INDIAN WELLS – On what served as an opening night, former Indian Wells mayor Dick Oliphant walked around the new 8,000-seat Stadium 2 of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, happy to see his latest project finally come to life.
“It was good to see people in it,” said Oliphant, who led the construction of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and then was the owner’s representative for the construction of Stadium 2. “I was tired of seeing an empty stadium.”
On Saturday night, a less-than-full stadium saw Jim Courier beat John McEnroe 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 during the McEnroe Challenge for Charity in the first event at the new stadium.
And the stadium reviews were good.
Courier called the stadium “absolutely spectacular.”
